Territiorial Army Sport

A major ‘Review of Sport in the Army’ conducted in 2008 included a recommendation that the governance and organisation of Territorial Army (TA) sport should be aligned with the Regular Army. It also recommended the Army Sport Control Board (ASCB) and Territorial Army Sport Board (TASB) should combine to become a single authority for the regulation and management of all sport.

The recommendations were endorsed by the Army Plans and Resources Committee and in Apr 11 the 2 Boards merged. The TA is represented within the ASCB by the Secretary TA Sport who joins the Secretariat, and also a nominated TA 1* who sits on the Board of Trustees. The merger comes on the back of several major initiatives that benefit TA personnel, not least of which is that TA units and individuals can now compete in Regular Army competitions. TA athletes can also represent the Army within prescribed limits, but are not currently eligible to represent the Army in Inter Services events.

It is appreciated that a majority of TA personnel would find it difficult to take part in Regular Army sports events held during the week. Accordingly, TA specific competitions and representative fixtures will continue and be scheduled at weekends. The TA Sport Secretary has overall responsibility for the organisation of TA sports events and the incumbent is assisted by dedicated TA Secretaries and Formation G7 Physical Development (PD) staff. The latter occasionally organise their own independent TA sports events and competitions. The principle TA sports are currently Athletics (including Cross Country), Football, Basketball, Fencing, Polo, Winter Sports (Alpine Skiing and Cresta). Orienteering is also undertaken.
